Reading Scheme Information
What books form our reading scheme?
We have a range of books from the following schemes: Oxford Reading Tree; Collins Big Cats; Rigby Rocket; Read Write Inc and Fireflies. These offer a range of fiction and non-fiction texts.
How are our books graded?
We colour code our books in line with ‘Book Band’ / Age related levels. (Colours grey to lime) The higher level books in Key Stage 2 are then further colour coded in line with the colours used by Collins Big Cats.
How do children progress through the colour bands?
Children are regularly assessed to determine their level of sight vocabulary and the strategies they use to read unfamiliar words and on fluency and ability to comprehend what they read. Their teacher then uses this as a basis to place them on the correct colour band. The children are issued with a list which is stuck in their reading record. Many children will not have to read the entire list before they are moved on.
Below is a table to show which book band is used for each level of reading. It is important to know that although children may be able to read very fluently, they may not comprehend what they read. The levels on the grid do relate to level of comprehension.
